Damn, is it hot where I am. Over 100.
Pending, how's your move going? Cko sounds like she's having a good time on her trip.
Anybody watching the Olympics?

blue I'm happy you made this; I've been trying to figure out where to catch up with people. I was actually wondering if we each needed our own thread--like the Dave Spirals Out of Control thread Stinger was promising/threatening. But that seemed like too much. So, this is perfect. I've been trying to catch pending for an update, too. Yeah having a good time, actually coming out ahead $. Slightly. Tough to be away from a computer. Trying to master this phone but may have to go eecummings on it b/c of the keyboard configuration. Also learned that due to how safari works on here I've been staying logged onto various sites for like 48 hours in a row. It's possible this is too much technology for me. Got thoughts on the other board issues but will post or chat when I get home tomorrow night.

The move is well over--a distant memory. Now I'm back in my parent's house for the summer, shuffling things around and getting rid of the excess in an attempt to get ready for the move to graduate school.

Blue, per our discussion, and to anyone else so moved to write, the rounds_of_kink amnesty round at LJ goes from August 17-August 27. You can pick any prompt from the past. BTW, it doesn't have to be sex, per se. Only drawback is there is no master list of prompts, you have to just hunt backwards. The description is about halfway down the page: community.livejournal.com/rounds_of_kink/Happy writing! Pending, when do you move to England?

The whole thing starts going down on October 1st, and I'm hoping to get there a week early so I can be a tourist before I have to be a student.

I'm so jealous. Living in England has been a life long dream of mine. I've visited for short periods, but no extended stays.

England, I'd so love to live there. London is my favorite city. Lived outside there for a few years in (equivalent of) junior high. I used to go into the city by myself to see the one American-style orthodontist in the whole country (I guess--he was a jerk). Take the train, shop at Selfridges and Harrods, Marks and Spencer. Buy music...the music, and music magazines were fantastic. Related, weekend in Reno. New suggestion for everyone. And my suggestions, they're more like orders that everyone must obey or I'll harass you months later and try to get money off you. ("But it was a bet!") Live Music, Everybody! See it as often as you can. For you younger folks, at least once/month. For us older types, at least three times a year. I'm serious. There's nothing like it. Your tastes may vary, but it must be (sorry) electric, and include guitars, bass, and drums. Because it has to get through to your bones and rattle everything around. We saw BoDeans. Not my main type of listening, but -- effective. (Of the songs at the link, I'd recommend Closer to Free. Yes theme song from Party of Five.) Now I'm on a quest to see as much live music as possible. Suggestions welcome.

I was a big concert goer in my youth and now we try to make it about once a year, with one big difference, we'll spend the money for premium seats or its just not worth it to us anymore. I have to have down center seats. I'm spoiled now.
Just recently saw Elvis Costello and The Police. Rocked. My ears rang for 24 hours. Before that we saw Genesis last summer. Also amazing. I probably have old people tastes but there you have it.

I'd reverse that, because I'm totally broke. Those of you in the prime of your lives with the earning power and whatnot should be going 12 times a year.

Darling you're in the prime of your life. When I was in my 20s we saw bands at clubs every weekend. Saw Talking Heads free on Friday on campus, and Saturday and Sunday at the local club, when they were first starting out. Ditto The Knack. I know that seems weird.
Of course it only cost $10 or whatever. And gas was, like, $0.59/gallon.
But like pace says, nice thing is being older, you can live it up a bit. I love the ringing ears part.

Talking Heads you lucky dog. That's one band I never got to see but I love them. We just watched Stop Making Sense with our kids the other day, laughing at the Big Suit. And the Knack, wow. I met Bruce Gary once shopping at a Beatles convention. My very first concert was Cheap Trick in 1980. Saw a lot of bands in the eighties: Duran Duran, Billy Squire, Def Leppard, Culture Club, The Smiths, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello (many many times), David Bowie, Squeeze, Rainbow, Journey, the Scorpions, Billy Joel (a few times), Paul McCartney. More recently, Sting, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Steely Dan, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo's All Star Band, Jethro Tull. I'm sure I'm forgetting some but that's off the top of my head. How about you?

So. Fucking. Jealous. auauhghgggg.
It's still roughly that in New York, for most of the bands I go to see. $10-20. I think I shelled out a measley fourteen bucks to see Apes & Androids earlier this summer, and A&A still gets hype for doing just about the best live show in the city. Dudes on stilts in raticorn costumes and hot chicks with glow-in-the-dark hula hoops, etc. Like a rave except almost no one is on drugs, and better music.
If you wanna see big-name bands you hear on the radio it gets pretty expensive, though. I have a pretty short list of bands I'm willing to shell out more than $25 to see. Fortunately there's also a lot of free live music around here, even if it's not always so great.
Pending, I thought you'd been living (are still living?) in Chicago? I thought the music scene there was pretty similar to here for some reason.
Hey, I like Elvis Costello! And, uh, The Police are okay, I guess?
Genesis... somehow involved Phil Collins, right? Yyyyeah. Not going to argue the old-people-taste thing there.

I frakking LOVE Elvis Costello, ever since 1977. He's my longest continuing fandom.
Actually, I'm one of those Peter Gabriel snobs that prefers the early years. But early Phil Collins era was good too, before they got all poppy and mainstream.

Gabriel, that's a good show. Theatrical. Clash, my favorite band of all time, many times. (Joe Strummer's birthday is coming up, I'm posting something at LJ. Weird thing he died on my birthday.) English Beat. (I idolize Dave Wakeling. First public figure I ever saw admit to being bi--"isn't everyone?"). Eurhythmics. New Order, Echo and Bunnymen, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds. U2. (When they first started, small club. Bono was drunk, he fell off the stage and they only played for an hour or so.) Stones, Pearl Jam. This could go on a while, so I'll quit for now.
Bands I always wanted to see but didn't: The Smiths (damn you!). ZZ Top.
Billy Squier, ha!
That sounds fab. I wish I could find something like that around here, but I don't know how. I kinda missed the rave era. But as my ex used to say, "Why do you think that's any different than what we did do?"

Yeah, twice -- 1984 and 1986. Only concert I ever slept out overnight for tickets for. It was college. Pouring rain. But we got decent seats. Clash, English Beat, New Order, Nick Lowe -- love them all but never got to see them. You're reciting my iTunes playlist though. We have a lot in common music-wise. My tastes are a weird mix of 70's progressive, punk and 80's new wave, and I love singer/songwriters of any style. The Smiths was one terrific show at The Tower Theatre in Philly. ZZ Top! Hee. He was sexy. The hair, the hips. Emotions in Motion. Yeah.

I've been getting recs from people around here on newer music. Pending, hope you'll weigh in. RandomNation had some good suggestions; oym had a website. Stinger apparently likes the Jonas Brothers, so no help for me there. But also Jack Johnson, maybe you like him, pace?
I'd like to get some recs from ksm, too, I think she might like similar music.
But Billy Squier, the dancing! the dancing! ack my eyes!

Aw, Jack Johnson is so mellow and easy to listen to. His most well known song is probably Upside Down, which you could find on iTunes. I recommend checking him out.
As for my enjoyment of the Jonas Brothers, they have some catchy stuff. It's not like I would go see them in concert or anything. Or, well, I wouldn't buy tickets to go see them in concert. If someone gave me tickets, maybe. Or probably. Hey, I never said I had good taste in music.

Jack Johnson is probably in the singer-songwriter category. He did the music for Curious George. Stinger, that reminds me, I have to look for those cds. I'll tell you when I find them.

I think Jack Johnson is good. I like him. I'm mostly prefer alternative/rock/screamo music that is sometimes hard to understand but awesome anyway, like Slipknot, but I mostly listen to anything depending on my mood. For example, I like listening to late 90s/early 2000 pop when I'm in a super happy mood. . Within Temptations and Taylor Swift are awesome too even if they don't fit into that category.

Hey, lostinflight, what else in that category besides Slipknot? I'm interested. And...from a way-earlier discussion over at TWoP, did you ever get your license? How did that go? There seems to be a lot among us on the driving thing. RandomNation is talking about getting a license, and bluesunflower teaches driving. Living in California, where we are obsessed with cars, I can't imagine not driving, but I know that's kinda bad. I love my car but it is not good for the planet. Or my stress sometimes. Oh, more music. I'm getting into Linkin Park, late, I know. My nephew (13) likes especially because Mike Shinoda is one of the few Japanese Americans in "rock" we know of. (And James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and Dan The Automator Nakamura of, among other things, Gorrilaz. That's not much.) Their song Hands Held High--I really recommend it. The live version is fantastic. This vid sucks but it's an amazing performance. The sound is good. Warning for language and politics; it's anti war. Stick around for the very end; Chester starts rambling and it is hilarious. Again, language. (I think I'll just link.)

So, I am convinced that DHL shipping is the way of the devil... they pulled the whole "we came by but you weren't home" business on me again yesterday... EVEN THOUGH I WAS HOME ALL DAY. Today, I waited outside and the guy had no intention of trying, and then he looked inside his van and guess what? There was my DVD that I was waiting for. No apologies or anything. There's a lot more to the story but I don't want my third post here to just be a bitchfest. But I think a DHL shipping center would be a good place to drop off vessels next year.

reapersite, that's ok, we often use this place to bitch. And whine and moan. So, feel free in the future. I think someone actually mentioned DHL as a portal to hell, in a way-earlier discussion. Also Starbucks.
Other news I'm getting interviewed on radio in a minute.
ETA: It's NPR! National. Don't everyone get excited at once. If you listen to NPR (right) and hear an intro to a story about college drinking, suppress your denial and listen in! You might hear me.

I like Avenged Sevenfold's Seize the Day ( ca.youtube.com/watch?v=HZqxl57PeL8 this is one of my favorite music videos though there are some mild violence) and Afterlife, anything by Rise Against, Weezer, sixx a.m. (Nicky Sixx), Alkaline Trio, afi, Korn ( The Evolution video kinda scares me because they present the issue in such a way ca.youtube.com/watch?v=VntFEWF8I8A )... Yeah, I know not all of those fit in that category but whenever I'm listening to something people tell me to lower the "screaming" music so I stuff it in there and I think they have some pretty good music. I like the pop/ pop punk stuff like Blink - 182, and fellow candians Sum 41 and Simple Plan too. That is an awesome song/performance by Linkin Park. I got teary the first time (ok most of the time) I hear Leave out of the Rest. Funny you should ask that today, cko, as tommorrow I'm going to go and write my G1 ( first drivers' permit in Ontario) test. I am so scared that I'm going to fail, as the book is way confusing and the test is completely multiple choice and I suck at those. I'm hoping the best. Any pointers? Driving seems to be big I guess but I'm still terrified. Is this normal? The guy sounds like a jerk. At least you got DVD now. What DVD is it? Was it worth the wait?

It was a copy of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles season 1 for me to review on TerminatorSite. I can't very well post and do a review if I don't have the DVD to review! DHL did the same thing to me last year when I was sent another screener, and another time when I was getting a replacement part from Dell computer. They're really useless. Speaking of DVD's though, I wish someone could at least be sure a correct-looking logo would be on the Reaper DVD. Sigh. lostinflight, good luck with your driving test!
