UPDATE Memorial Day 2009: If you're here to find out more about the Syndication Deal, and Affiliates in Texas, click to this post: reaperdmv.com/index.cgi?board=seasontwo&action=display&thread=197&page=8#6988So, based on the fairly optimistic update from Tyler, and goading and general concerns expressed by many here, this is a thread to list ideas and activities for promoting the show to new viewers, or solidifying with casual viewers. Think of it as one of those collective household "to-do" lists. You can: --List an idea you have no idea how to accomplish; --Get/give input on an idea; --Volunteer for an idea posted here; --Report on your own recruitment doings. Come on, people! We're doing a great job of promoting show info to current viewers (aka ourselves), but how can we gain some momentum for the show among new or occasional viewers? To start us off, I shall report on other people's ideas: 1) wdpender's cool plan: 2) Stinger's idea: Start doing screencaps for Season Two. Upload them somewhere and promote around, like at LJ (well that part was my idea.) This might encourage pic/banner/icon makers, and help promote the show. 3) Stinger's other idea: Talk to the people at Bret's site, Krakoom, about affiliating with us. 4) Blue/my idea: Icon contest! to promote the season premiere. Launch at LJ i guess. Link to screencap sites. Blue, are you still up for this? When're we going to do it? 5) My idea: if everyone just recruited two people, we'd triple the viewing audience! So get started everyone!

I've been talking it up to my RL friends, and I'm going to send an e-mail to everyone in advance of the season two premiere asking that they give it a shot.

...in the spotlight this week is a comm for Burn Notice.
If they can get it, so can we! I can look into it, but I'm neither the most convincing or persistent person here...maybe Blue or pace?

To do what? Sorry, didn't quite understand your post.

Look into how you get a comm on the list to be in the LJ spotlight that shows up on your LJ homepage? I've joined tons of comms that way. In fact thanks for the reminder, I'll go see if I can figure it out right now! Hi! by the way. ETA: www.livejournal.com/misc/suggest_spotlight.bmlI didn't submit anything yet.

We don't want to do anything *too* early though. If we do it all now, in 2 months people will have forgotten. It's better to do it closer to the premiere.
Anyways, I'd still like to do an icon contest, but I'm never really sure how they work. Pace - you've been a part of fic contests, do you have any ideas? I know banners are somehow involved, but I have no idea about submissions or voting.

I know with icon contests they are usually done blind. People submit their entries to a moderator privately and then they are all put together in a single entry (without names) and people vote privately. Then the winners are announced and banners are given out. You can give a prompt or have rules for what the icon must be based on.
It's easier to do on LJ where you can screen comments so maybe you want to do it at our news comm? Then you can advertise for it on reapericons and invite people to enter and vote. If you do it here then there would just be a locked thread for the nominees and everything else would happen by private message.

Oh that is a cool idea though. Let us know when you're ready for help with...disseminating?...it. Or whatever.

Just checked two library systems in the Cleveland area. The Cleveland Library system currently has 10 copies of Reaper on DVD and they are all checked out. They have an additional copy on order. The Geauga County (suburban area of Cleveland) Library has two copies of the DVD; both are checked out. I didn't know there were twelve people in this area that even knew about the show!, so maybe we are picking up new viewers this way. I would suggest, as I did with the Geauga County Library (and that is why they have the two copies), asking your local library to order a copy(ies) of the DVD set. The more libraries that have it, the more potential viewers we can reach.

Someone who posted a review of the DVD on Amazon said that it was recommended to them by Netflix (and now they love it). That's great to know, that the show could pick up new viewers that way.

Actually, being a fairly new convert to Reaper, I was introduced to the show that way too! One of the few times Netflix actually had a good recommendation! I can't remember what other movies I had watched that the recommendation was being made upon, but my guess is Chuck and Supernatural...

I remember posting links to review places and going "Review! Review!" I think watching online is a big draw too. I was really surprised when E! Kristin's last spoiler section had a question from a Reaper fan "who had just finished watching them all online."

Did people see this? The LiveJournal community reaper_tv has almost 300 members, and the mod is looking for someone to take over? community.livejournal.com/reaper_tvDoes this seem like an opportunity? Or ask him/her if we want to merge with reaperdmv? Or transition to? Or is that too scary-corporate? Goal is to keep those 300 people hooked in to Reaper news and fandom, of course.

MWAHAHA! MORE FOR THE EMPIRE! Seriously though, I actually thought reaper_tv was already us. I think it would be good to keep in touch with the mod and her replacement, but I think it's healthy to let somebody else (if there's a good person ready and willing) do it. More variety in voice is good for fandom, it keeps people from getting bored, or alternative info sources drying up.

I applied, but also said I'd make catko and pacejunkie moderators too. (Hint hint for you guys (and anyone else here who wants to help mod!!!!) to go over and say something tooooooooooo). I told graupner it would be a bit easier for us when the show started because reaper_tv is already set up for episode talk and stuff, and our blog isn't. I know a lot of people don't want to come to our forum to post, but they *will* like to talk about it at the lj comm - and reaper_tv is already established. Which imo is all the more reason for *us* to do it.

I agree we should try for it, with 300 members there seems to be nobody active. I'm hoping that changes when the show comes back.

How 'bout we start it Wed. Feb. 11th, close it Wed. 18th. Then close voting on Sunday the 22nd (or Monday the 23rd)? That's a week and a half cushion to the premiere.

How does this sound?
Please edit and make comments. If we can get this post up sooner over at LJ, it's better! And Blue, did you ever contact/hear from reapericons? Or should I try?

Couple of things off the top of my head:
I'm thinking limit to 10. I don't think we'll have many people entering to begin with, but we also don't want someone entering 100.
Add a thing that the premiere date has to mentioned. If they want to add a non-date version of the image, we'll be happy to add it to the final list, but it won't be eligible for the contest.
Also, I think the best idea for voting is to gather them all into one post (maybe sans names at first?). They can also email icons to reaperdmv@gmail.com, add them to one of the other posts we've made, or post them at reaperdmv.com, etc, etc,

I'd alter it depending on where posted; we could post here and ReaperDMVNews; and link at other LJ comms
Okay QUESTIONS: --Can we bump the due dates up a bit, or do people really need...well I guess they do need a week and a half lead time. --Is it okay to use Pacific Time, do i need to figure out that damn GMT +whatever, since so many international folks? I mean not like we're going to be strict on the deadline. --Any other edits/changes?
I want to post this by...Saturday night prob.

Going through the googled sites, found some with numbers of fans commenting and enthusiastic about Reaper. Could be to good to include on our regular promoting rounds. Add sites here that you promote on, or think we should--I know not all these sites allow promoting as such, but we could be more aggressive about commenting where there are other fans around. I'm sure I've forgotten some. We already promote at:LJ, our own and related comms TWoP Facebook: "Official Reaper Group", others? Myspace: karyn's group IMDbTV.com The CW forums We could add:TV Squad.comBuzzsugar (I think I registered there, need to remember) Zap2itFuton critic? CliqueClack TV seems to cover Reaper quite a bit

So here is something one of us MUST do. Scifichicks.com, which I've occasionally read, does reviews and news of "science fiction" shows. Apparently they started the site as Supernatural fans. I'm trying to figure out how we might talk to them about Reaper, and possibly *someone* volunteering to write reviews? And here's another one: Midseasonreplacements.com.

I just made a friend watch it (we were hanging out, bored, flipping channels and I plugged in my laptop and just went "hey watch this").
She loves the comedy but she feels like a lot of the time the characters are sooo stupid, it can be hard to watch without getting totally frustrated. Of course, characters that are more stupid than they are account for about 90% of all TV, but I refrained from the urge to go all "No, you're a stupidhead!"
Yet she is the kind of viewer who can sit through an Idol-type show. Sometimes I really don't get her.
I'm sure I'll find a way to make her watch when the new season starts. Heehee. After all, I managed to make her sit through an 18-episode marathon.
She couldn't care less about the Andi/Sam stuff, the relationship stuff really drags the show down in her opinion, which... I can't blame her for, because while that stuff doesn't turn me off from the show, I can definitely take the show with or without it.
End of progress report. Heh.
