How to babble about Dexter without spoiling. I was dubious about how the Jimmy Smits character was going to work out, but whoa. Dexter organizes his grocery list alphabetically, hah! And this from the foul-mouthed ever-awesome, "mean skinny bitch" Deb:
"A baby? A motherf*cking roly-poly chubby-cheeked sh*t-machine, are you kidding me?"

My guilty pleasures are kitchen and home shows. Anyone watch the show Kitchen Nightmares? Chef Gordon Ramsey visits failing restaurants and helps turn them around. Some of these places are disgusting and its cool to see how he transforms them.

Can someone please tell me why I'm still watching Heroes? It sucks, and yet I can't turn away. Why?

pace, sorry, I cannot help you with either Heroes or Kitchen Nightmares. But I can post this excellent icon from Dexter. It cheers me up even though...well, I won't say, but Doakes is one of the best TV characters ever. by weapon_icons.. And I'm watching Chuck--he and Sara are at her 10-year reunion and they're playing songs from that Buffy playlist I posted!

Can someone please tell me why I'm still watching Heroes? It sucks, and yet I can't turn away. Why? I know what you mean. For me, you know a show is going downhill when you enjoy 90210 more than it. It's hard to stop watching after doing so for a couple years! Except, I think I'm getting closer to turning away from Heroes -- I have the TV turned on, yet I find myself doing homework or writing, only bothering to pay attention when something bad happens to Peter, so I can laugh maniacally at the screen, haha.

Seriously, it's hard to stay focused, it's all so silly. By having the good guys turn suddenly bad and the bad guys turn suddenly good, it's moved into the arena of the absurd. Everyone is so out of character they've been reduced to cartoons without dimension. Everyone has so many powers I can't keep track of what each can do anymore and there's no more drama or suspense because most of them can't ever die, and the ones that can are healed by others. It's past its expiration date, now I feel like I'm watching food spoil.

Watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia thanks to Stinger, and loved it! The characters are hilarious, the storyline so stupid and insane. I'll keep watching!
Finally caught Life on Mars, and ditto that, thanks to pace. Good concept, wonderful 70s look and music. I recommend both shows.

Maybe soon you'll feel like joining the LoM TwoP forum yeah? It needs help, it's a small fandom right now like reaper was (is). Last night's ep was awesome.

My cousin was being interviewed today for the special 50th anniversary DVD of "Pillow Talk" (he's a movie critic in Boston). Of course, the topic of Rock Hudson's sexuality came up and how if you told someone in 1959 that Rock Hudson was awesomely gay, people would have wanted to know why you were trying to ruin his career. I mentioned (off camera) the line in Life on Mars last night.

Ah, loandbehold, you should have gotten on camera! There is a bit of debate at TWoP about that, whether the attitudes were accurate for 1973--or 2008. Yup, I'm checking it out, pace, but not ready to post yet. The show lends itself to good discussion, though. Oh, and lo knows this, but if anyone else here is a Sports Night fan--and if not, why not?--we're doing a rewatch at the TWoP thread. Should be fun; it's a fantastic show.

I've not seen the new life on mars, but I saw bits and pieces of the original...and if they've kept as close to the original material as everyone is saying they have...well....the original was full of inconsistencies and anachronisms as well. Many of them deliberate, part of the mystery.
It also gave them a lot of wiggle room on unintentional inaccuracies.

Since we're seeing everything in 1973 through the lens of a 2008 Sam, you can easily explain away any anachronisms or contradictions. Sometimes the show looks more like a 1973 parody than the real thing and you can say well this is just how it looks to Sam. It reminds me of How I Met Your Mother where the entire show is told in flashback by Future!Ted. A lot of times he'll admit he remembers things wrong, sometimes not until after the story is told, or he'll forget someone's name and they'll refer to her as blahblah, things like that. So if they do have story continuity gaffes you could always fanwank it and say Ted got it wrong.

I'm still pushing Pushing Daisies, which apparently is at risk of being cancelled. Which would be such a shame, because it is an unusual, magical, and lovely show. Is it a bit too coy, too precious at times? Yes. But it is so worth it, because they take such pride in the beauty and aesthetics, the fashion and the set design, the colors and the textures. Here's the thing I keep saying--It's like a mental massage, or an hour (44 minutes actually) of meditation. (I almost typed "medication" which fits, too.) It increases your feeling of well-being. Plus it's also very funny. Art! It's good for you! (It's on tonight. 8-9 pm.) ETA: Damn, it's not on tonight. Hope that's not a bad sign.

Noooooooo! Can't they just give it a chance? Sigh. I only care a lot about 5 shows and one may be cancelled, one we don't know when it'll start, one hasn't started and may be in trouble (Dollhouse). And I don't think Dirty Sexy Money is doing too hot, either. I've got to branch out more. It would be too weird to have your only show be Dexter.

I didn't think Dollhouse was in trouble before, but I do now. Fox just gave it a Friday night time slot. It's like they've given up already.

I'm a big fan of Pushing Daisies, though I feel it's much more DVD-watchable than broadcast-watchable. It's so much it's own universe that commercials are really jarring and annoying. It's one of the ones I'm asking for this Christmas for sure.
I felt like the premise for Dollhouse was going to make the show hit-or-miss, and it's getting so much trouble I'm agreeing with people who are saying it'll be a cult hit that Fox will promptly can, a la Firefly. So much for our dreams of a group field trip to TWoP for a new show. It would be the exact same timeline as Reaper: show gets cancelled, TWoP drop-kicks it to the sci-fi basement, we wave goodbye to Barnes, and then get banned by Jacob. Rinse, repeat.

Ha ha. It could become our thing. Show-ruiners. Hey, I've done it before, I can do it again. But I'm not sure about Pushing Daisies on DVD, sure, I'll get them, but part of what is cool about it is how surprising it is; I wonder how rewatchable, though.

Maybe just once a year, like Civil War re-enactors. We'd have to pick veeery carefully though.
You think this about most mystery-format shows, but with the good ones, it surprises you how many details you pick up on rewatching. And that's not even mentioning when you watch it years later because you're bored and don't have anything new, and realize you forgot how it went.
...Hee. I never get tired of scrolling up and watching that Doakes icon.

Got the ok to post this, because Debra from Dexter is my other favorite TV character ever. She's funny, she's tough, she's vulnerable, she's profane. In fact onyourmark and I were 'shipping Deb and Doakes but...anyway. By totally_tinus at eternal_icon. Pace, blue, there are some lovely Lost/Charlie icons, too. I'm back to watching Brothers and Sisters, Sunday 10 pm on ABC even though it's gone in directions I don't like (haaate Justin and Rebecca) but the acting is fantastic, and I enjoy seeing how they handle the Kevin and Scotty marriage. I'm making a point to catch The Office and 30 Rock for the frequent laugh-out-loud moments. (Jim and Pam on 24-hour bluetooth! Tina Fey dresses as Star Wars to get out of jury duty!) And hey, tonight no class, so I can choose between The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother v. Chuck. Decisions, decisions. What! AV Club tells me Seth Green was on Entourage? I hate that show with a passion, but I may have to watch it. I'd do (almost) anything for Seth.

Well, here's Fox's excuse for the Friday night decision for Dollhouse. I can see the logic but I still don't know if it helps or hurts: So they basically expect it to be nothing more than a cult show, and as such they couldn't keep it on another night for long where bigger ratings are required to survive. But on Fridays, they just may get through the 13 episode run and give the show a fighting chance. What do you all think?

That's clearly drivel-from-the-suits, pace. I think your interpretation is correct. But I must swim against the tide and say I'd love to have a good show on Friday nights. Unlike (I guess) the rest of the country, I like watching TV then, it's easier to commit, and I adored it when X-Files was on Fridays. Even if it means it's doomed.

I'm afraid they'll just cancel it anyway after airing the 13, and blame low ratings.

None of you should be wishing the Friday night death slot on ANY SHOW. This is blasphemy, and is so offensive I actually had to post to stop the sin. Friday nights are only good for friendless losers like us. btw if you hear anything on Pushing Daisies you best post it, because I'm starting to let the DMV be my primary news source.

That sounds about right. I'm going to also go out on a political limb and call Fox's moving the show to Friday nights part of an insidious 'abstinence only' plan.
