What're people watching this new season? How about some recommendations, reviews, and reminders of when shows start?
I'm going to try the Alan Ball vampire show, True Blood, tonight (Sunday) on HBO, at 9 or 10:30.
I'm still in for Fringe, two hour pilot this Tuesday, 8 pm, Fox. Pace, have you given up on this show?
For some reason Chuck is on Saturday, Sept 13, 8 pm.
The other shows I like don't start 'til later.

Yes, I've given up on Fringe. I saw the leaked pilot and thought the mythology was already too convoluted and heavy handed, the whole thing felt forced, the dialogue was poor and the characters acted stupidly, doing things no real person would ever do. Too many plot holes and there were no characters to hook me in. I've learned my lesson from Lost and I'll never get suckered by J.J. Abrams again. This show already looks like Lost after three seasons and for a pilot that's a bad sign.
But on the bright side, shows I will be watching:
Fall: How I Met Your Mother, Heroes and Life on Mars
Spring: Reaper, Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, and if you can believe it, Lost but only because I want my frigging answers. I'm not expecting to enjoy it, I'm just too invested to quit.

Mixed feelings. Good quality filming, great characters and acting. I liked the small Southern town setting. The idea of vampires living among us, but seemingly as second-class citizens with a dangerous sexy appeal--that works. Vampires drink synthetic blood, but some crave human blood, or "true blood." There are prostitutes that specialize in letting vampires bite them. And possibly there are humans who crave vampire blood? The main character, played by Anna Paquin, is somehow psychic? or superpowered? Don't know how that will play out.
But, not sure if it's going to hold my interest. The pacing is strange, and the complexities are unfolding rather slowly. Plus, extremely sexual situations and nudity. Just so you know. The words of a true fan.

I was a true fan. But I don't watch anymore. [rant]Personally, I would think the powers that be would prefer fans who actually like the show. But I guess they think they can live with the people who are more likely to tune out at any moment and who won't waste their money on their products.[/rant]

Fringe looks good, I have started to watch 90210 which was alright but to like the OC and The Hills which I used to watch before but I will be watching that True Blood.

I've heard of True Blood and really want to see it, simply because I've read a couple of the books it's based on, but alas, I don't have cable.
I actually watched 90210 and *gasp* liked it. I feel like I've sinned in someway. My mom is trying to get me to watch the original series now. >.<
Also, I'm looking forward to Supernatural returning, even though last season's finale underwhelmed me. (I'm probably the only fan to think this, heh.)

That's okay, you can admit that here because if the CW needs it to succeed to survive, then we're all for it here at the DMV. Whatever is good for the CW will hopefully ultimately be good for Reaper.

I'm so far behind-- I just caught the pilot tonight, and liked it. But only as background, I wasn't giving it my full attention.

Fringe just got its own TwoP forum, the weasels. Let's hate them, who's with me?

I thought the sex was kind of random, though.

I agree with both of you, and my lukewarm post above. It's that kind of show. Actually I have to admit I liked it less after watching it, but more after reading Jacob's recaplet at TWoP. I know, traitor. I believe I'll give it another try. But, with the sex and nudity, you do have to be careful who you watch it with, I think. And, because I'm starting to fall in love with AV Club: the recap/review from there. Pretty negative, the comments especially. I blew off Fringe; just wasn't in the mood when it came on. Still curious, but I'll have to catch it by chance sometime.

Never never never read AV Club comments. They pride themselves on being able to deride anything and everything; only read the comments if you hate something and want to make yourself feel better by laughing meanly at your computer screen.
I'm feeling like I could get into Fringe, but it's all about whether they have actual good mysteries/monsters of the week. I found it very well produced, but the female lead is pretty generic.

IIRC, their recaps of the last few reaper episodes were pretty nice.

I have two friends that watched Fringe. They both felt that same way I had about it when I had seen it earlier. Blah.
I hear Dollhouse is taking a break in production while Joss takes over and does some rewrites on some scripts. Good for him, I love that he's a control freak.

Aw, hell. I was going to start watching Burn Notice--since so many people have recommended it to me, and loandbehold was kind enough to explain the appeal in more detail--but I see I missed the premiere, it's on Thursday nights, 10 pm, USA.
I don't know if this about Dollhouse is good news. Joss taking control is never bad, but ... this is a bit worrisome.
Back to True Blood for a sec, the graphic nature of those scenes was unsettling, but I really loved when the sex video showed the guy flickering into vamp face. That was coooool.

Let's see if I can explain this. AV Club commenters are indeed negative and profane, but see below one of my posts on Buffy TWoP for a tie in with Pending's, yes, recent political post on LJ.
Can we agree this wins the prize for most sites mentioned in one (otherwise meaningless) post?
And yes, the Reaper recap/reviews at AV Club were quite good. I'll link those in the media thread.

Burn Notice rawks. I'm able to follow it and I haven't seen every episode. I kinda only sporadically watch it, mainly because I only really get to catch it when it does marathons on my days off.

I watched some Burn Notice back in those halcyon days when I had cable, but I was just watching for Bruce "The Chin" Campbell. When there was not sufficient The Campbell, I got bored fast.
Is anyone planning to watch the new Night Rider series? I have such mixed feelings.

Okay, I have to say: watching Supernatural alone, in the dark, while drunk is the same transcendental experience I remember from season 1. But more importantly, they're doing angels/fallen angels this season. Like whoa.
I wouldn't put any money on how Supernatural's mythology affects Reaper's, since SP has already shown a vastly different view of Lucifer, but I still find it seriously fascinating.

"Like whoa" -- my thoughts exactly on the inclusion of angels this season. I honestly never expected that on Supernatural; it's always been more of a monster/demon show. However, it makes perfect sense -- if there's all these supernatural baddies, then there has to be some...um...goodies, right?
Overall I liked the premiere, although some aspects disappointed me. Next week's episode looks awesome.

Noooooo! Do not tempt me into watching Supernatural! But...I might. I already want to try Burn Notice.
I'm committed to: Pushing Daisies: Wed, Oct 1, 8 pm. Dirty Sexy Money: Wed, Oct 1, 10 pm. (Looking for a suggestion for Wed, 9-10 pm.)
Given up on True Blood and Fringe for now. Trying to decide if I'll watch Dexter (Sunday, Sep 28, 9 pm) when it runs, or wait for my brother to...anyway. It's one of those shows might be too hard to wait a week in between. My brother is recommending Mad Men, but I'm still going thru Buffy and Angel, so no time for more DVDs.
Also watching Homicide: Life on the Streets, which is simply amazing and I can't recommend it enough. Unbelievably good characters, and so funny despite the subject matter. (Asking for The Wire for the holidays, figure that's a good way to spend winter days.)
Knight Rider, no. I was briefly interested when Will Arnett was going to be Kitt, but he got bumped for ?Val Kilmer?

All that Ritual Romanum comes from somewhere. I just love how ambiguous they made it; Castiel might or might not be an angel, but he's still big and scary. Very different perspective than 'White Party' Steve.
C'mon, cko, you know you want to, it's going to be on the same night as Reaper...
Same here. And Kitt's got all this weird, sad, design junk stuck on it-- it's just sad when the car of the future looks like the Metallicar's nerdy younger brother.
Dexter's first season was so well done and self-contained, I didn't feel a need to scrape and search for more. Fringe has gotten me with some nice special effects, but I just sort of leave it on in the background.

There's one scene I want to see in true blood, so I'll probably continue watching it until they get there. Given that the first season is covering the first teeny-tiny book, and it was towards the second half of the book, it'll probably be awhile.

I'm with you guys on the Supernatural train. Didn't think they'd go the angel route, but damn. If that wasn't a kick-ass episode, I don't know what is. I love how "dark" he is. Its a nice change from all of the fluffy angels with halos and gowns bit. Not to knock Steve or anything... ahem. Starting this Monday, I have the return of How I Met Your Mother(w00t!!!). Tuesday's are Privileged on The CW-which by the way, is frickin hilarious and well done. Damn the CW marketing team for making it look like Gossip/90210! Uhh...Greek on ABC Family. Wednesdays are Pushing Daisies. A full night of CW on Thursday with Smallville and Supernatural. And then Sundays with Desperate Housewives(i know....i know) and Brothers and Sisters(i may be dropping this depending on how the premire turns out). And...that's it. God...its like I'm sick or something. So much tv!

I just love the ambiguity; I'm personally pulling for Castiel to be a fallen angel who's lost it and forgotten that he's not an angel anymore. I love Steve too, but he's not all that ambiguous, with his little white messenger bag. But hey, Steve's not the big bad of the season either. ... You know, unless Sam really does turn out to be in the Devil's army, and things get messy. THIS is why I keep saying Reaper and Supernatural make an interesting evening line-up! They may both be genre shows, but they're working their material in very different ways.

I can't wait to see a Reaper/Supernatural line-up; it'd give me a great excuse to ignore the world every Thursday night. I don't find the shows similar at all, but I think they'd compliment each other well: funny with a dash of dark paired with dark with a dash of funny is perfect. Too bad some diehard SPN fans want to attack Reaper with pitchforks and will probably go ballistic when this happens. :/ Tuesday's are Privileged on The CW-which by the way, is frickin hilarious and well done. Damn the CW marketing team for making it look like Gossip/90210! I was surprised at how much I liked this show; definitely more entertaining than 90210, which is starting to bore me. It's quirky, and I love the sister aspect of the show. I just can't see it lasting very long with its premise, though. Can they really stretch it out for more than a season or two?

I hadn't really thought of that, but it *does* have quite a built-in expiration date; eventually those two girls are going to go to college. Does their tutor tag along, or what?
