The CW, (courtesy Reapersite): Airdate: Tuesday, March 3rd at 8pm. This thread will remained locked until the end of its East Coast premiere (9pm Eastern). Feel free to prediscuss this info in either the Spoilers No More or Spoilers: 2x1 threads until that time. Thanks! We are restarting the campaign to email the CW, only this time to let them know how much we want a Season Three. With such a short season, we need to start as early as possible. Please take the time after this episode to drop them a short line. Even something as simple as "I love this show, please renew it for a Season Three" helps. The more people who write, the bigger the impact. The CW should know there's a devoted fanbase out there. Thanks!
And don't forget to spread the word! Campaigns work best when word-of-mouth spreads the news outside of the closed communities working to get it off the ground. And since snail mail campaigns work best, here's the address for Dawn Ostroff at the CW: Attn: Dawn Ostroff CW Network 3300 W. Olive Avenue Burbank, CA 91505 Again, even a simple "Renew Reaper for a Season Three ASAP!" helps. And if you're even more ambitious, join Bret's Socks for Reaper Campaign.

Oh show, how I've missed you! *loves* The writing was particularly strong, acting was great as usual and the CGI for the souls going poof was awesome! How great was Sam's little bit, descending into the warehouse with the plucky music in the background? That had me going. What else...uh...oh, the getting the souls drunk thing was priceless! Leave it up to Sock to think of something like that. Hehe. Andi was firmly in the right for being pissed off at Sam(and co.). With his Reaper duties, I can only imagine her being fearful for his life. Liked that they made up in the end though. Missed Gladys, who needs to be made a series regular. Next week looks great. Loved the promo.

That was such a great episode! I could not stop laughing at Ben's cheerful "lady of the night!'s bath!" line, and the Devil's reaction about the book saying that he was attracted to radishes ("Sexually? That's disgusting!")
That was awesome! I also loved the twinkly CGI.

Hee! Somebody just mentioned that it'd be great if one of the souls woke up and thought Sam was the tooth fairy! That was just...pure win. The episode in general was too, but that scene in particular. I almost missed the raddishes line from cracking up over "Your pentagram is a Star of David". Too much awesomeness at the same time can sometimes be a bad thing. I may have to start taping the show, just so that I dont miss anything. Heh.

THAT WAS GREAT!!!!! I don't know what some of the stuck up reviews were on about it, I absolutely loved this. Senor Trampoline! Johann Sebastian Sock! The Beer Baby! Craftmatic Sex! Man, I wish I could remember all the funny lines because there were a lot of them.
I had no idea how they were going to solve that soul problem (until right before he did it anyway). Loved the "college cramming" and the scene with the soul at the end was amazing. He's going to be a great addition. I really didn't get the sense that this episode was formulaic at all, not like they were last year. There was enough else going on that the souls didn't feel like the main thing, just a fun obstacle to overcome.
I lost it when they went to steal the truck and Sam gets in the cab and there's the worker sitting there. The comic timing on that reveal was perfect. Devil was perfect too as usual, in every scene ("Mazel Tov!"). I'm going to get sick of Andi's complaining fast (she wore on me quickly last year too) so I hope that stops now. Sam was adorable being so happy at the end. Finally he has hope.
One interesting thing was when they were about to steal the truck and Sam said, "Sometimes in order to do something good you first have to do something bad." That was an interesting thing for Sam to say, he never struck me as an ends justifies the means person but if it marks a change in him I like the fact that the Devil is rubbing off on him just a bit, just for the drama.
I was very interested in the reveal that the Devil has loads of children and starts with high expectations only to have them each turn out to be a disappointment and he moves on. Maybe the honeymoon is over with Sam, and he was only treated like he was special when he was a new toy. Sounds like the Devil can easily get tired of him and move on to the next child. No special favours after all, and Sam may be faced with the dilemma of turn evil or die. If he doesn't deliver, the Devil could kill him with his work. That adds a nice tension that I love.
One small nitpick is why didn't Sam ask about going to stay at his mom's house, and has he even spoke to his mom? I was surprised there wasn't at least one mention of his mother or Sock and Ben asking why they couldn't crash there.
I missed you show! Welcome back!!

I'm very happy at the return of Reaper, finally!
Though, this episode seemed a bit weird to me. Maybe because I haven't watched the show for so long, but it just seemed kind of... off. Hmm.
Anyways, I greatly enjoyed the episode, especially when the fairy music played as Sam descended from the roof. Of course, I predicted Sam would use the water to conduct the electricity as soon as he used the hose on the souls. I'll have to thank Pokemon for allowing me to actually guess something like that.
The Devil was brilliant as always. Though, I thought he wasn't very happy when Sam was completely willing to go drinking with him. And, does the Devil even know that the free soul had escaped from hell with all those gang members?
I also thought Andy was pretty annoying, and a I really, really hope she won't continue it through the season.

So I pretty much agree with everything you all have said here! Loved it. Lots of depth, plenty of funny. I was shocked that they introduced that Escaped Soul character so early, and as such a major story arc.
I said this at TWoP too, but this is the first time we've seen Sam really be grim about his future, instead of "accepting my stupid fate." His slight air of desperation in trying to get out of the reaping with the Devil in the "mazel tov" scene. The literally dark scene where he's telling the guys he has to break up with Andi. It all makes his excitement about the possibilities of escape even more giddy and believable. Though that scene was so out of character--I enjoyed seeing Bret's acting in that, but it's still puzzling. MooshyMooshy at TWoP had an intriguing theory about whether that was a body-switch thing with the Sean Patrick Thomas character. Ooooh. I don't think so, but....
So many great lines, I'm more tempted to do a transcript rather than re-cap. But...no promises.

Okay, this is why I don't mind spoilers. Because no matter how many I get, they never live up to all of it in context. It's like trying to eat a sandwich in pieces, instead of all put together. I mean, to be honest, I knew pretty much everything that was going to happen throughout the entire episode, including Sam getting them all with the water. That was in one of the promos. Still didn't take away from the awesomeness of the whole scene. And I have to say I floved the episode...up until the end. Everything seemed like it was just leading up to the climax in the warehouse, and it was a perfect climb. Awesome awesome awesome. However - the ending felt like a bubble bursting. Completely out of character for both. Now, within the context of the upcoming season, I'm sure it will feel less out of the blue, but for now I dislike that I have to fanwank it. And I dislike even more that I can fanwank it in so many ways. I will say this fanwank though: it seems to me the Devil is trying to throw Sam off. Keep him off-kilter on something. "You're not as special as you think you are." The complete turnabout by the Devil in the warehouse when Sam started in about "You're supposed to be my father!" "Even in the wild animals kill their young." Not to mention that whole end spiel by the Devil just made me feel the Devil is threatened by Sam, and by Sam possibly being so close to a possible truth: that he *is* special. So the Devil's gonna start making Sam's life a little more...grungy I think. Aw. I hearted Andi. I thought that whole side story was very realistic. OTOH, Kristin can go. So can her Craftma-orgasm and her unnecessary bikini. Those were the worst scenes ever. I really wished they'd ended with the Tooth Fairy / Alan scene, or even the Sam/Andi one. Then this episode would have been perfect. Except of course, for Ben's hair. ...especially when the fairy music played as Sam descended from the roof. "Aw, you look just like a little fairy princess!" And yay! dagzar! Yeah, I noticed that line. I guess Sam is gonna go "dark" (well, as dark as Sam can go anyways), but it still seemed like such an abrupt change of direction for the character IMO. That bugged the bejeezus out of me too. The trio also could have easily vesseled the unconscious soul when the battled the first two in the alley scene, but they left him there and ran away.

Hey, did I miss the episode where we found out The Devil is for sure Sam's father? I thought that was still just a guess. Why is everyone in the show acting like this is a certain fact? Who plays the nepotism card on The Devil when you're not 100% sure he's your father? That was weird. Or are we still supposed to infer it's all lies lies lies?
I wanna know what's going on with Sam's mom and dad. Yeah, why didn't they even mention the possibility of crashing at Sam's parents' house?
Wow, that could be cool, but I don't think an escaped soul would be so unafraid of The Devil himself.

I have to say, I really did not get the feeling that "Sam is Satan's spawn" was set in stone. I don't really know how to explain it, but everytime the Devil and Sam talked about it...well, let's just say there was a weird vibe about it IMO. Maybe more like an "assumed" fact rather than a "confirmed" one? If that makes any sense? Especially by the Devil. Like it was a "Yeah....uh...ok I'll run with that" kinda thing.

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - extremely apt song choice from Sam going down into the warehouse. Considering that the cattle prod looked very much like a fairy wand when he was capturing the souls!!!! So yeah I'd agree Sam was very much a fairy princess, hehe, thanks for that wording, Blue. Also thought that music was far better than anything Mission Impossible-esque, given the way that Sam went into the warehouse, hmm... I liked this episode, and I spent a lot of it shrieking, but it's kind of a let down? *shrugs helplessly* Don't know why they didn't think of staying at the Oliver house...

Haha, no kidding. Mission Impossible would have been the typical choice. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was inspired. The way the souls went into the vessel in a spray of sparkles was very Disney magical. Best moment of the episode.
hypercaz, I know what you mean, I'm kinda sorta slightly let down too. Maybe it's because there was no Steve and Tony, no Sam's hot mom and dad, I'd actually still like to see Kyle again even though he's probably been written out. I also miss Josie.
The whole Sam and Andi thing was super boring.
After that cliffhanger with Sam's mom and dad, this ep there is nothing? Sam doesn't even go home to check on his mom the "grieving widow"? I wonder if they deleted a scene with Sam trying to go home to crash and dear mom acting weird and throwing them out. If that's what happened they shoulda cut some of the Sam and Andi stuff to make room for that. The important stuff!
Mostly I'm glad the show is back and cautiously looking forward to next week. There better be Sam's mom and dad or there will be hell to pay! Hell I say!

That's kind of the impression I got too. They first said "possibly" at the beginning of the show then later Sam assumed it was so, the devil played along as if it were fact. Although Ray Wise said in the most recent CW interview, he "didn't know" who Sam's mother was, the other known son's mother was a Russian gymnast. So was that a slip of the tongue on Ray's part or a clue of what's to come? edited to add spoilerfont

Finally saw it. God bless internet piracy! Because iTunes and CWtv still got nothing-- I didn't think anything would pop up on YouTube, but some enterprising sort (can't bring myself to say soul) put it up.
Loved the whole thing -- though I wasn't entirely happy with the pacing on the 40 souls, I would've like to see them stretch a task out over 2 episodes and this was a good opportunity -- but my favorite scene was actually the ending one between the Devil and Sam. I can't think of anything that shows how far Sam's developed that he's actually testing the boss/old man out. That interpretation's based on some pretty circumstantial stuff, but that was the 'reverse psychology' vibe I got. I should probably flesh that idea out later, but I think it was probably the most important scene in the premier.

This was the best soul grab ever! I definately think there was reverse psychology going on with Sam and the Devil. If Sam isn't special why does the Devil talk to him so much? The devil wanted Sam to spend time with him all of last season yet when Sam finally agrees the devil throws him out. I'm ok with not showing Sam's parents in this episode because i totally believed that Sam was still grieving in his scene with Andi.

The Devil keeps trying to get Sam to go out with him and now he seems weirded out when Sam is like "okay!" Maybe The Devil is like those guys who wolf-whistle and holla obscenities at attractive women on the street, and those guys totally expect and are amused by the disgusted responses and dirty looks, but if one of the women ever tells them to drop trou and satisfy her now, they'd be scared silly.

Sam would have totally been killed if there was no hose there, or if that pipe doesn't connect to any actual water. Talk about dumb luck.
For a sec I thought Sam would get shocked, too, since he's standing in the water. But I guess his shoes have rubber soles.

It's not real electricity though, right? So even though the cattle prod can give a bad shock to someone who's not supposed to be captured by it, maybe spread out through the water it wasn't bad enough to hurt. Alan (the soul who was left out) didn't seem to be hurt, though it did sort of look like he wasn't standing in the water.

It wasn't that he electrocuted the souls, it was that the water acted as a conducter for the vessel, sucking them all inside in one go.

Interesting comment from this review/recap at TVHolic.com: I've seen spec and nitpicks about this, but it does again raise the question of the Devil's omniscience. How much does he know, how much does he miss, how much does he pretend to know or not know?

So was that a slip of the tongue on Ray's part or a clue of what's to come? Considering Tyler's quote that answering whether Sam was the Devil's son "is sort of complicated" I'd go with 'a clue of what's to come.'

You know, after the season one finale I would have said 'Yeah, Sam's devilspawn'. But for that fact to be assumed by all parties in episode one of season two... and then to hear that the question would be "dealt with" by the end of season two... makes me think there's got to be more going on. There's just got to! I think the show does tend to do things offscreen (cough get rid of Kyle cough cough) and then act all innocent about it- "What brother?" "What narrative uncertainty? I didn't see any narrative uncertainty, did you?" If it could only get rid of that and give me a wee bit more continuity, I would be a happier viewer. Which isn't to say I'm not a happy viewer already; on the whole, my reaction is EEEE my show is back, and I give it many squishy hugs.
