Okay, having seen this again now, I'm more convinced than ever that dad Oliver is a demon and that they've been dropping clues all along. First they showed us through Gladys that a demon can't be killed by a mortal weapon only to find out here that dad survives being buried alive.

Then here, the Devil points out when he learns about Solomon's cage that it "may have the power to ensnare a demon" but not the Devil himself.

Then, when Tony call's Sam at his house, when Sam says "Tony" the camera cuts to Mr. Oliver's face and there is definitely recognition there. He knows Tony, but how? The same demon network that had Steve knowing Gladys, something they also pointed out? The demons seem to know one another like a community.

The one big question though is whether Sam's dad is the Devil or just his own dad, the demon. Either way might explain Sam's powers, and we don't know if his mom is a demon or human or something else. But I'm guessing she could be human, and to marry and spawn with a demon required some special dispensation and an agreement. Maybe that's the twist here, I don't know. Thoughts? If that's true, then why the special relationship and why would the Devil lie about it and keep that secret, so maybe not. But it does seem like they've been hinting at dad being a demon.

But she was definitely more angry than sad or surprised to learn of what happened to her husband, as if she blamed him for what went down. Considering their earlier argument, she seemed to almost expect this to happen and was trying to prevent it. Dad Oliver knew just where to go to rescue Sam, as a demon, he would possibly be privy to the demon's plans and may even have known about the cage. Maybe that's what they were arguing about, and Mrs. Oliver felt it was time to tell Sam the truth before someone got hurt.

I'd kinda forgotten how ice cold and angry she was, but I felt like she was angry at... Sam, almost. Or at least if I'd been Sam I woulda come away from that thinking she was angry at me. Brr.

Also, forgot about Sam bringing his mom the glass of water. Taking care of her again, just like in the Drunky McDrunkerson scene from the beginning of the season.

Suddenly this all makes sense and sounds right to me. When we were discussing all this spec before, I had no idea. Yay. I like any theory that has Devil-Is-NOT-Sam's-Father.

As always, I'm fighting for the position of loving Sam's -- or maybe Bret's -- reaction to his dad's death, talking with his mom, Andi, and friends. Stunned. Mad. Reined in.

And the effigy scene. I got teary-eyed. And remembered with a bolt how much I felt, first time, overjoyed that the show had not been cancelled.

OK, now. Wait for DVDs.

I never get tired of watching this ep, I love it so much. And it is a good feeling to celebrate with the boys on the show's renewal. And we're getting our HD hookup today and I just found out we'll have CW-HD and Reaper is broadcast in HD so Yippee!!! Season two in HD (because CW's analog broadcast is crap, the worst looking station I've got).

I don't think she was mad at Sam but it would be a common reaction for a child like Sam to believe she was angry at him. It sure would look that way and Sam is just the right kid to take the burden on himself and feel guilty. It's unfair, but we saw the parents fighting before and standing outside the relationship dynamics we know that his mom was angry at his father.

Good pickup, it's great consistency of the relationship. Just as Sam's parents have always babied him, he in turn takes care of them. I think it shows their closeness, but its also a bit dysfunctional, because Sam is given some responsibilies he shouldn't be burdened with, while at the same time they have prevented him from having the normal responsibilities he should have had that come with maturing.

I think Sam's anger towards his parents is long overdue. I think he'll be upset until they start telling him the truth. I wish we knew what was in that contract. I'll bet the Devil left instructions regarding how Sam was to be raised which may seem like Sam was being babied.

Today I re-watched "Cancun". Perhaps you remember Madame Ozera and her tarot cards. I was wondering if her session with Sam had any real meaning at all? Sadly, I don't read tarot cards ...
