First, I hope I am posting this in the right forum.
Second, why in world was the devil upset that Sam wanted to party with him?
Third, if I've messed up the posting protocol or posted a spoiler please don't be too harsh.

I have a great many theories, marty, and not all of them match. The one I've currently settled on (which technically means nothing since I change my mind at the drop of a hat), is that the Devil wasn't upset that Sam wanted to party with him, he was upset that Sam might be cottoning on to the truth: that he *is* special, despite the Devil's efforts to try and convince him otherwise. IMO, both Sam/Devil scenes just had all the earmarkings of the Devil trying to throw Sam off the his balance. Don't worry, we'll leave the whips and chains for next time. I will say though that next time it might be better to post in the episode thread, since when I finally get off my butt, I do on occasion delete the threads that are so specific, they kinda die out fast.

I think the Devil lost his enthusiasm for tempting Sam the second Sam seemed eager. It seems like it's all about the thrill of the chase for him and the turning of something innocent. If Sam was anxious to sin, the thrill is gone and he might as well move on to someone else he can corrupt. That was my take on it anyway, particularly with his comment after of Sam having no idea of the evil that was coming his way. I think the Devil was trying to put the thrill back in and scare Sam all over again by letting him know he was playing a dangerous game with his willingness. If Sam pushes it too far he will reach the point that he may never be able to turn back and that's the last enticing notion for the Devil.

Thanks, those were some great responses. Blue... your answer seems extremely plausible. I was kind of thinking that the Devil might have been a little melancholy about the whole thing. Like maybe he sees that the end of his reign might be in sight. Or possibly that Sam reminded him of himself in the past. So I think I might have been on the same track... sort of.
pacejunkie, wow, I hadn't conceived of that. Wow. I love that theory because it has a very biblical feel to it, not that I am very familiar with the Bible. Thanks for that, I am definitely going to be thinking about that.

Like maybe he sees that the end of his reign might be in sight. Sometimes I get a strong feeling it's this. And Sam has a lot to do with it.

my feeling is that he only does it to harass sam. When sam plays along, there's no fun in it.
