I figure everyone can talk about the DVD stuff in each episode thread, like for the commentaries and such. This thread is for that extra DVD stuff that doesn't fit, like maybe the deleted scenes or something.

Wow the deleted scenes are great! My two favourites in particular: 1) Sam and Kyle fight over Sam's new car. Sam throws the keys at him and tells him to take it and then Sam grabs them back and calls him an ass. Funny. 2) Scene from the end of the Cop. So powerful, I'm sorry they deleted it. Sam and The Devil, Sam calls him out on having just used him. The Devil tells him he was never in danger "you know how I feel about you". Sam hits him back accusing him of treating him like a toy that will just end up killing himself like the cop did. Finally he storms off telling the Devil. "Don't ever do that to me again" leaving the Devil speechless. Wow. Just wow, what a scene. WHY OH WHY DID THEY DELETE THAT? Oh and there's a also a funny one where Sock imitates Ted behind his back and one where Ben and Sock play a game to guess the oldest hotdog on the snack bar grill. But that Sam and The Devil scene is worth the price of the whole thing. I love when Sam gets pissy.

Timeliness. As in, that scene kicks ass, but if you'd seen it in context it would have been a *huge* jump down Sam's development arc. Sam standing up for himself isn't such a big deal as late as 'The Cop', but standing up for himself after watching the Devil kill a man, and gloat over his body about how 'my toy, I get to break it' would have been way out of character at that point. 'The Cop' is one of my favorite episodes because it's the first one that brings some serious darkness and violence to the table, and Sam really rises to the challenge. But that scene sounds like a Sam who's gotten desensitized to that kind of stuff to the point that he can recover in the amount of time it takes to walk away from a body, and I think that would have rung false.*
*All speculation, since SOME of us can't get the DVDs because we study in a certain foreign country.

Pending, that was a very insightful and well considered argument. It makes total sense, even as my emotional side just wibbles for the scene we never saw. You're right of course, but damn Sam was sexy standing up to the Devil like that, and uberangsty wondering if he'd blow his own head off someday. I hope they save it to use it at some point in the future when the timing is right because man it kicked ass.

I'm *almost* positive they will... The whole scene feels really late in the game, doesn't it? The Devil actually saying "You know how I feel about you" REEKS (in a good way) of the father-son stuff they've set the stage for in season 2. The more I think about it, the more it feels like something they wanted to save for when it would make more dramatic sense.

I actually loved that scene, but I DON'T think they will save it and use it later on. If they were, then why would they have put it on the DVD?

No no no... it REEKS of male release and kinky bondage followed by a tickle-fight.
But they will too put it back. The whole "you know how I feel about you" and addressing that Sam's fate would never be like those of your common sinner... its one of the foundations of the show, dahm yoh

Ah, I should've clarified-- I think we'll get a different version of this same scene down the line. As for why they put it on the DVD even if they're planning on redoing the scene later, I'd say they're fanning the "is Sam the Devil's son?" flames in the off season.

I thought of another reason why I'm glad they yanked it, and this coming from me who loves the scene -- I don't like The Devil admitting to Sam that because he cares about him, Sam was never really in any danger. I need to believe Sam can be in danger and not suspect that the Devil is going to swoop in and rescue him every time. To me that took away from the stakes.

Finally sitting down to watch the extras and...sigh. It makes me miss the show even more. The gag reel was a kick, they really look like they're having fun. The deleted scenes, I could see why they were each deleted. I loved Sam in the scene with Kyle, and their interaction was hilarious, but it underscored why that was bad casting imo. The others were cute or funny but no great loss. The last one, with Sam and the Devil was very whooooaaaa! and quite heavy, but I see what you're all saying here. Scary to see the Devil seem genuinely pissed; Sam too.

Ahhhhh. Good point. Now I'm not so sure about this scene getting a do-over. Early on as this 'I'm omnipotent, I care about you, so you'll never get hurt' could be seen as the Devil being facetious, but thrown in after all the stuff about Sam being the Devil's son and it starts to look like Sam's not risking anything, because he's Daddy's favorite. Then it becomes even more of a dramatic albatross.

Well, watching the show you wonder, just as I guess Sam does, if the Devil is just pretending to care. And if it's all a joke to him. But eventually every viewer is gonna accept that the Devil's moderate concern is genuine. In a way. He's rescued him before and is always up in his business.
Sam has a guardian angel.

And Sam has already pointed this out in an earlier episode. I just saw it in the rewatch but its the one where they're sitting at a bar at the end of the ep and Sam tells him he realizes that if he gets killed it will be at the hands of an escaped soul but it won't be the Devil that does it. That's why he says he's not scared of him. So in a way they've already lowered the stakes with that scene and the more we know its true the less scary the Devil seems. Eventually, Sam will really have to piss him off, because we'll no longer be impressed with him slapping Sam around, or they'll have to come up with more sources of danger for Sam, something the Devil can't always protect him from.

I don't know... The Devil is all ulterior motives. I could buy the Devil hanging out with Sam because he thought it was funny, like the Devil's version of tapping the glass and scaring the hamster (we've had this metaphor before... I don't think I'm remembering it right). But the idea of the Devil just innocently wanting to spend time with Sam, get to know him, and teach him the family business is all so... Mundane.
We've gone back to presuming no surprise in the 2nd season? Either Sam's the son or he isn't? Because if you indulge in some hypotheticals, there's more than just that. We don't really know why the Devil's so interested in Sam, and it might be because Sam's a threat somehow. If Sam were to find that out, him knowing might be dangerous enough that the Devil to act on it. Obviously neither Ray Wise or Bret Harrison are going anywhere, but that doesn't mean we should go ahead and rule the Devil out as a threat.

Maybe as the Devil's so, he's destined to take over for his father by deposing him somehow, so by raising his child in secrecy, Sam doesn't know that he's supposed to take Daddy down. So he could be a threat and still be Dad.

Ohhhhhhh! So much to think about! But there's still the threat to his loved ones, right? At least that's been a motivating factor for Sam (almost) from the beginning. From my desperate request, onyourmark found this, in his own words. Awesome thread, by the way. On the following page is blue's formula for pet-teasing. ETA: Heck, what I started this post to say was something about "mundane" meaning "worldly" or "of the world," which I was going to relate to the Devil wanting to hang with Sam because he represents this world: ice cream, dating, video games. Chicken-fried steak. But...I lost my train of thought. I'm noting it anyway in case anyone can take it somewhere.

Yeah, as Fallen Angel Number One Lucifer certainly pines for what he's lost. We've seen that in the way he covers for his feelings of love and longs to eat ice cream again. He does get to enjoy those things vicariously through Sam so that may be motivation enough to hang with him, but it doesn't explain why he would care for Sam in particular when he could get that thrill from any mortal, including Mimi.

I think the Devil has been evil for so long he's forgotten what a good person looks like. Sam has his faults but he has a conscience which the Devil lacks. Sam even loves the parents who sold his soul to the Devil which I find shocking. Sam if you want to go off on them after learning your dad is alive, I have your back and will be cheering you on. The Olivers remind me of the Dursleys from the Harry Potter series.

Heh, kathyk, good one. I too can't wait to see what happens with the dad-is-alive reveal. I keep thinking about pacejunkie's story Demons & Lies; to me that's canon until we hear otherwise.
