Why do we not have grades above an A+? Because this episode was so beyond excellence, I just, am at a loss of words. Tom Spezialy needs to write more! The only thing that was bad about this episode, was the fact that the show hasn't been able to hit this level of quality on a regular basis. I mean, seriously show? Just when I start to think you've got nothing left, this episode comes along. First, The Devil showering Sam with gifts was good enough. But to top it off with a wee little horse!?! Awesome. You ladies...along with Mark and Dave, who've been complaining about Sam not being shirtless are in luck. Lots of Sam!Flesh tonight. Nina and Ben's story was hysterical and I loved every moment of it. Between her destroying expensive WorkBench products, to ripping his windshield off to the sound of Cher's "Believe", to them finally getting back together...it was just made of so much win. Add to that Nina's invasion of Sock's dream! Holy bejeezus! Her ripping out his heart startled me for a sec...Reaper should do more of this. The creep factor is a good thing guys, use it! And I was really sad about Mr. Oliver's decision and was resenting it until that final scene. The show could mine so much material out of this, it's making me giddy. The scene where Sam actually captured him was getting to me as well. Reminiscent of "Cancun" in that effect. Seriously though. A++++++!

This.
As I was watching this episode I was lamenting the fact that this show is likely not coming back. Seriously, two A+ episodes in a row. I was thinking it was like last year when the show only reached stellar heights after the hiatus and barely pulled out a renewal because of it. I don't see that happening twice. What a shame. I've never loved this show more than I do right now.
Also agree about the Ben/Nina plot. Sock was actually amazing tonight, though I'm starting to hate Ben for being a battered spouse and accepting it. The way Sock stood up to Nina at the Bench I was so proud of him. And the dream really freaked me out before I realised it was just like what Gladys did to him.
Amazing dialogue here too. Sock: "You ride that internet you weird glorious freak" (or something like that). And Andi's bit to Sam: "You followed me for seven years like a puppy until you wore me down. That wasn't seduction, that was erosion." LMAO! Best line in the whole series.
Bret was really outstanding tonight. From his awkward seduction attempt to his anger at the Devil, to his bloodlust quotient rising and finally his profound sadness over sending his father to Hell. That last part actually made me teary, I so was not expecting it, but it was an amazing plot development, and great material for Sam. Great to see Dennis' nerfblaster make a comeback. Perfect situation for it.
A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best episode of the season along with Sweet Science. I teared up at the ending. The entire Ben and Nina subplot rules. One small nitpick Mr Oliver why didn't you try to help Sam sooner you could have saved both of you unecessary pain?

Oh oh oh! And The Home Bench or whatever it was! Ahh, that is classic. I love the idea of there being an "evil" opposite. Maybe if they ever have to destroy The Work Bench(i try not to think about this too much, as its incredibly depressing), then they can go work there.

Bargain Bench! And Dad bought all that stuff from the competition instead of his son's place. Nice one Dad.

It's hilarious how Sam tries to be a pitbull in the body of a poodle. I am a bit surprised they didn't seem to make it obvious that Sam wasn't the only Reaper the Devil has sent after Sally, and that all the "shells" and bones and stuff were their remains. They made that a Big Aha! moment in the sides. reaperdmv.webs.com/2x09sally.htm

Great episode, and terrific comments you all. I don't have much to add, but for now here's a pretty funny thing from Zach Handlen's review at AV Club which pretty much echoes what folks were saying in Chat. Except the last reference of course: who else here recognizes that? I'm guessing pace and loandbehold -- anyone else?

This was such an amazing episode, from the opening "I'm not done showering you with spectacular gifts!" to the Mr. O stuff at the end, it was just so fantastic.
I cracked up when the guy said that Sock looked like "a Swedish housefrau" in his blue apron.
Also, I Heart SexyTurtleneck!Sam.

I agree. This was a solid "A". Many good lines, especially Andi's, and a great job with the soul of the week plot. Nina remains my favorite tertiary character. Her scenes with both Ben and Sock are made of win.
Question: Has Mr. Oliver forgotten all about the pages of the contract he ripped out and burned, or is it that he just can't tell Sam what's in them? (Of course, there's what's behind Door "3" - the writers have forgotten about the contract.)
pace beat me to the lyric ID, but, then again, she sold her soul to get us a season 2. [whiny Sam voice] That's just not fair [/whiny Sam]

I think that secret has already been blown, though I'm sure there's more to it. It's kind of a moot point now. If you like, you can sell your soul for season 3. We still need a volunteer.

King Charlie lives! Long live King Charlie.
I did tear up at Sam sending Mr. O to hell. It was so cute that he and the rabbit kept each other company.
I did not like the turtleneck outfits. They look like lady clothes. I find his usual look plenty sexy, really. That and the suit and tie look. Plus the shirtless look. Tastyyy!
Finally, Sock gets back to being a pretty good friend instead of a total jackass. Speaking of which, that Bargain Bench guy was Sock's style twin. Same hair, same type of outfit. Wonder if there's a Bargain Bench Sam and Ben, too.
Wow, Blue, that's really interesting, what you said about the sides. Read them. It would have been awesome if they stuck to that. It's so wonderfully creepy. Wonder why they didn't? Just watching the episode, I just assumed those were all animal bones. I especially liked the part in the sides where she wants to use Sam's teeth for a wine cozy. Creep-tastic.
The Devil jumping through the window was priceless. Sally kind of reminds me of Sarah. It's not just the accent, the way she said some of her lines. The facial expressions.
Sock and Ben dancing and dodging Nina slashing at them with her tail to the tune of Cher's "Believe" was awesome, too. As was the logo on The Devil's business card representing the nine circles of hell. Snazzy.

I did tear up at Sam sending Mr. O to hell. It was so cute that he and the rabbit kept each other company. Yeah, it was quite the sad scene. I hope Mr. O really sticks to his promise to be Sam's dad again and helps him out of his contract. I did not like the turtleneck outfits. They look like lady clothes. Andi really hit the nail in the head. Sam DID look like a 1970's pornstar... haha Finally, Sock gets back to being a pretty good friend instead of a total jackass. Yeah, but don't you think that Sock is spending a lot more time around Ben lately? Sam seems to be pretty much all by himself now, although it's nice that Andi is getting closer to him again. Speaking of which, that Bargain Bench guy was Sock's style twin. Same hair, same type of outfit. Wonder if there's a Bargain Bench Sam and Ben, too. Yeah, it would be awesome if the Bargain Bench turns out to be just like the Work Bench, with 'clones' of Sam, Andi, Sock, Ben, Ted and the new guy... hehe The Devil jumping through the window was priceless. Yeah, the best funny scene after Sam knocked himself out in "The Sweet Science". Sock and Ben dancing and dodging Nina slashing at them with her tail to the tune of Cher's "Believe" was awesome, too. As was the logo on The Devil's business card representing the nine circles of hell. Snazzy. It was great to see that Ben still had the same car (yay continuity!). It has been fixed since Gladys attacked them back in Season 1, but I guess that car and demons just don't get along very well... hehe About the Devil's business card, keep in mind that, according to the show, Hell must be just like a big corporation, only more 'evil like none has known before'... hehe It was a great episode. I really hope the show keeps these writers around for the new season (that's right, I'm not giving up!).

Speaking of continuity, it was nice to see her guest appearance in Andi's little "seductor" speech, even though it was very Sniff-tastic. "Following me around like a puppy dog for seven years isn't seducing, Sam. It's erosion."
How I wish the show would not leave all this stuff hanging like it does.

I have no idea what a 70s porn star looks like, so I'll just have to take Andi's word for it.
True, true. My impression of their dynamic before have been that Sam and Sock are closer friends and Ben is kind of a bit more on the sideline. Gradually it's shifting over to Sock and Ben being better friends and Sam getting more isolated. Sam and Ben never seem to band together and leave Sock out of something.
Oh, I nearly forgot to add that the best thing about The Devil jumping through the window was Ray Wise doing that almost jazz-hands thing. The kung-fu yell and the musical flourish are close behind that.
"I am the dark lord of asses!" I must slip that into daily conversations somehow.

I thimk we see Sock and Ben together more often because Sam has to work with Morgan. I like the scenes with Sam together they are good friends. I think Sock is a bad influence on Sam.

Hooray! Exactly how I would describe the process--lengthy and fun. I'm going now to read it. Now that was fun to read, and really brought back this great ep. Terrific job! Especially for pointing out the spots where they could (and did) use product placement. So true. I would like to know how to get Ben's muscles. Wait, did that sound wrong? Not that there's anything wrong with that, right? And this is why, even with the wrecked mytharcs, plot holes, and unnecessary characters, we want this show to continue. Thanks, reallymzungu!

Great recap. I think the last five minutes elevate this episode from good to great. Mr. Oliver went from self pity to concerned parent and it was awesome. Sam truly was devasted at the thought of sending his father to Hell. I'll bet he sat up all night holding King Charlie. I think he was wearing the same clothes in the garage as he was at the Bench. The show had better have a happy ending for sam because I don't think I could take seeing him this miserable. Sock acted like a rival for Ben's affection instead like a good friend. This was the second time Sock mentioned Ben's brown eyes, I have male friends and I've never heard any ot them talk like that ever. Maybe Steve or Tony will encouage Sock to come out of the closet in the finale?

The last 3 episodes were horrible, this episode was definately a step up. But why do all the best episodes get the crap ratings? It's why were in this mess in first place.
